MENDENHALL
To Everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under the heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
A Time to Be Born: Alzean B. Skiffer was born on December 31, 1934, to Freddie and Allie Burton in Simpson County, Mississippi.
A Time to Worship: Alzean accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member at St. Mary until she united with Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. At Pilgrim Rest, Alzean wore many hats, Sunday School teacher, deaconess, mission leader, program committee chairperson and church mother. In all of these positions she served humbly with grace and compassion, always striving to exemplify Christ in her words and deeds.
A Time to Learn: Alzean attended D'Lo school and graduated from Harper Vocational School. She pursued and received an Associate's Degree from Hinds Community College.
A Time to Work: Alzean's commitment to excellence made her an excellent employee. Although she worked at various locations in Simpson County, she excelled as the Supervisor of Environmental Services at Simpson General Hospital. She retired from Simpson General in 1998, but is remembered for her dedication to the patients and staff.
A Time To Love: Alzean married her childhood sweetheart Woodrow Skiffer and to this union four beautiful children were born: Carolyn, Curtis, Kenneth and Rodney. Woodrow and Alzean served together and invested their lives in their family, church and community. God in His Sovereignty called Woodrow home and Alzean married Ollie Taylor who also preceded her in death.
A Time to Laugh: Alzean enjoyed life. She was adventurous and loved experiencing new people, places and things. She enjoyed traveling but also found joy in cooking, sewing and entertaining family and friends.
A Time to Die: Alzean departed this life on October 10, 2023, at Merit Healthcare in Flowood, Mississippi.
A Time to Mourn: Alzean leaves to cherish her memory three children, Carolyn Robinson, Curtis (Nita) Skiffer, and Kenneth (Deborah) Skiffer all of Mendenhall, Mississippi; one daughter-in-law, Ernestine Skiffer of Mendenhall, Mississippi; two sisters, Margie (John) Genous, Jackson, Mississippi and Marilyn (Russell) Golden, Louisville, Kentucky; two brothers, Harold (Vickie) Burton and Charlie (Vanetta) Burton, both of New Orleans, Louisiana; one brother-in-law, Archie (Janice) Skiffer, Mendenhall, Mississippi; four sisters-in-law, Floree (Johnny) Webster, Tina Fuller both of Cleveland, Ohio, Earnestine Blandford and Vernie Burton both of Mendenhall, Mississippi; 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Alzean is preceded in death by her husbands, Woodrow Skiffer and Ollie Taylor; her parents, Freddie and Allie Burton; her son, Rodney B. Skiffer Sr.; son-in-law, Joe C. Robinson, Sr.; brothers, Freddie and Willie Burton and sisters, Betty Burkett and Vera Wilson; and a host of in-laws, cousins, nephews and nieces.
Charm is deceitful and beauty fades, but the woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Reward her for her work: Let her actions result in public praise. Proverbs 31:30-31
