Carolyn Carter Funeral Program

Carolyn Carter, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and surrogate mother to many, passed away on May 9, 2025, following a brief illness. Her sudden passing has left a profound and lasting impact on all who knew and loved her.

Born in Pinola, Mississippi, in 1948 to Jenora ("Bud") and Magnolia (Walker) Black. Carolyn was the fifth of six children. She attended Alcorn State University, where she earned a degree in education. Eager to build a meaningful life, she moved to California to begin her career and start a family.

In July of 1970, Carolyn married Henry Carter, also of Pinola. The couple later relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where Carolyn became a dedicated educator in the Chicago Public Schools. Over the course of more than 30 years, she taught multiple generations of families, contributing significantly to after-school and summer programs. Her efforts extended beyond the classroom as she worked to forge partnerships with local businesses to support these programs and uplift the community.

Carolyn cherished her role as a mother and grandmother. She shared a special, deep bond with her grandson, Christian, and treasured the time they spent together from his earliest years. She also had a deep love for her church New Zion, which she reconnected with upon her return to Mississippi. She served faithfully in various capacities, including the Home Mission, Pastor's Aid, and the Kitchen Committee.

Carolyn leaves behind her beloved husband, Henry; sons, Derrick and D'Juan (Tessa); and her cherished grandson, Christian. She is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Joyce Simon and Gwendolyn Lucas, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends—many of whom affectionately called her "T.T. Carol."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jenora and Magnolia, and three sisters: Vera Lois Davis, Mary Kathy Holman, and Dorothy Jean Carter.

Carolyn's warmth, wisdom, and nurturing spirit touched countless lives. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
