Doshie Mae
Buckhalter
Jan 4, 1935 — Aug 1, 2023
Mendenhall
Doshie Mae Weathersby Buckhalter's journey began on January 4, 1935, in Raymond, Mississippi. Born second among seven siblings to the late Josephine Spells Weathersby and Kylie Weathersby, Doshie was destined for a life that would touch countless hearts.
Her educational path was woven through the vibrant threads of Big Creek and Marve Grove during her early years, followed by the enlightening corridors of Piney Woods Country Life School for high school.
In her professional life, Doshie's footsteps echoed with dedication and compassion. She served at the State's Tuberculosis Center at Sanatorium, Mississippi, and embarked on a journey that saw her embracing various roles within the State of Mississippi. Her legacy shone brightly through her role as a Home Health Aide in the State's Welfare Department, where her caring touch was a beacon of hope for those she served.
She met and married Dock Buckhalter in 1954, embarking on a journey that would bring forth nine beautiful lives.
From an early age, Doshie's spirit was graced by the light of Christ. Her footsteps led her to Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where her faith blossomed further after her move to the community in 1955. Her devotion to her church family was steadfast and adorned with numerous roles as a melodious voice in the choir to the steadfast leadership as President of the Women's Mission. The classrooms of Sunday School were privileged to have her wisdom and warmth as she shared the teachings of her faith. She freely shared her spiritual gifts with the Music and Mission Departments of the Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Association. In the community, she also served in the Volunteer Homemakers Club, Friends of the Library, and a long-standing member of Eastern Star.
Beyond her roles and titles, Doshie was a devoted mother, friend, and pillar of genuine kindness in her community. She was always a tender heart, a listening ear, a delightful storyteller transporting you back in time, a beautiful woman of wisdom full of encouragement and faith, proving that all things are possible. With a heart and mind that found solace by the water's edge, she loved fishing or "slinging string" as she liked to say. Threads of creativity flowed through her, stitching together moments of joy through her quilting and sewing. Her green thumb transformed dirt and seed into a plentiful harvest to eat, freeze, can, and share. Her kitchen became a haven where she whipped up delights both sweet and savory - feeding all who came by her table and welcoming everyone. Her nimble fingers wove beautiful afghans through crochet, and her laughter could light up even the darkest of days.
As the sun sets on this chapter of Doshie's incredible life, she reunites with those who have gone before her: her daughters, Jacqueline and Belinda; her parents; and five cherished siblings, Kylie, Wilma Jean, Huey P., Arby, and Alma.
Doshie's legacy remains etched in the hearts of those she leaves behind: seven children, Cheryl Denise, Antoinette, Bernadette (William), Anthony (Doris), Dock (Theresa), Terrence (Barbara), Sanquanita (Muhammad); 21 grandchildren, Chasity (Deon), Dewayne, Ralph Jr. (Kimberly), Danyail, Amanda, Alexander, Sadé (Chris), Amber, Claudia, Aja Denise, Courtney, Benjamin Sr., Micah, Quintin, Dock Jr., Josiah, Terrence, Cleo, Elisha, Quentin, Josephine; 16 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Howard Weathersby and Minnie McDonald (Havard); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her life's mosaic is a testament to love, faith in Jesus, and the profound impact one soul can have on so many people. As we celebrate her memory, let us remember that her story is far from over. It lives on in the lives and laughter of her descendants, the melodies of the choir she once graced, and the gardens she nurtured.
