Funeral Program - Hulon Ray Holmes

Mr. Hulon Ray Holmes was born in D'Lo, Mississippi, on December 30, 1953, to Mother Evelyn Holmes and Father Cleveland Holmes, Sr. He was the big brother to Melvin Holmes, Jerome Holmes, Cleveland Holmes, Jr., and Eva Mae Holmes. As a child and throughout his life, Mr. Holmes was very generous and kindhearted. He had a love for reading and especially watching his favorite cartoons. He loved playing football
and basketball with his brothers as well as spending time with his entire family.

Educated in the Simpson County School System, Mr. Holmes attended Harper High for both Elementary School and Middle School. He later graduated from Mendenhall High School in 1971, where he was recognized many times as "All Conference" in football, basketball, and track. He was exceptional in all three! At the age of 17, Mr. Holmes became a Civil Rights Activist, where he provided security for meetings, assisted with
organizing marches, and participated in protests. From there, he attended Southern University on a full ride Football Scholarship. In college, he received the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference Award) for his extraordinary athletic talent! Mr. Holmes graduated with his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1980 from Alcorn State University. It was at this time that Mr. Holmes decided to pursue a career with the New York City Housing Authority as a Housing Specialist for many years. He touched many lives while doing so.

Mr. Holmes (aka ZZ) was the dedicated and loving father of three stunningly handsome and outgoing boys: Hulon Ray Holmes, Jr. (aka Sonny), Garrett Roger Holmes (aka Garry), and Emanuel Holmes (aka Eman). He is also the playful and fun Uncle, Great Uncle, and yes even Great Great Uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Holmes married his wife Deborah on August 13, 1974. The two of them loved to have long endless conversations, watching movies, and traveling! They were each other's confidant, and the best of friends.

He was also a long-time member of the family church Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent at the age of 16.

Mr. Holmes also loved listening to music. Some of his favorite songs were "Why Can't we be Friends" by War, and "It's a Family Affair" by Sly and the Family Stone.

Mr. Holmes will always be remembered as a Gentle Giant with powerful words, who was known for always "keeping it real." His selflessness, kind heart, and generosity were unmatchable as he was always giving to others.

Rest In Heaven, Mr. Hulon Ray Holmes (aka ZZ) we love you!
