Selma's Journey
Selma Bowens, the daughter of Fred and Annie Lou Robinson, was born in Pachuta, Mississippi, on July 2, 1930. She was one of seven children.
Selma's formative years were spent in Jasper County. As a child and youth, she attended Chapel Hill M.B. Church with her family. As a young woman, she met and married Mr. Albert Bowens. The couple made their home in Mendenhall, Mississippi and welcomed three children to the family fold—Ail, Dennis and Patricia.
Selma was a devoted and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She worked hard to provide for her family. She was an excellent cook and was a faithful employee for years at the Mendenhall Hotel ("World Famous" Revolving Tables). During Thanksgiving 2020, she was supervising her granddaughter Tisha in the kitchen, to make sure the tradition of her delicious chicken and dumplings would continue as a family legacy.
Selma, a longtime member of Nazareth M.B. Church, was a beloved member of the community. She was sweet, kind, loving, patient, always wore a smile and was never seen angry.
Selma finished her earthly race on Friday, December 18, 2020, at her brother's home in Pachuta, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three children; grandson, Christopher Bowens; and siblings, Mary Lou Watts, Velma Watts and Queen Parver.
Selma's memory will forever be cherished by her daughter, Della Willis; grandchildren, Dennis Walker, Ail Bowens, Jr., Melisha Carmichael, Tisha Barnes, Sharon Powell, Selena Powell, Regina Powell, Krystal Bowens, Bobbie Cooley, and Sonya Dampier; sisters, Wilma and Lyneal Bender; brother, Gerald Robinson; and a plethora of great grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
