The Life and Legacy of
Timothy Walker
Jesus told him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come the Father except through me." John 14:6
Timothy Walker was born to Frank and Ella Walker on March 22, 1948, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. He was the youngest of 21 children. Timothy often reminisced about his mother, Ella, from whom he learned Southern culinary techniques. Decades later, he would employ these cooking skills coupled with warm hospitality, and lovingly share them with family and friends.
He was a proud Alumnus of Harper Vocational High School (Simpson County Schools) and graduated in May 1966. He furthered his education at the Prentiss Normal and Industrial Institute, where he received his Junior College Degree, granted with "honors of graduation as testimonial of his correct deportment and fidelity as a student." He also attended Alcorn University. Politically astute, socially and culturally conscious, Timothy worked with the NAACP and later as Precinct Captain in Chicago (Cook County), Illinois.
Timothy served in the U.S. Army, earning the Sharp Shooter's Designation and receiving the National Defense Service Medal Sharpshooter Badge (M-14 Rifle). On November 30, 1970, he received an Honorable Discharge and was presented with a testimonial of esteemed gratitude for Faithful Performance of Duty.
Increasing faith, love, and fear of God were features of Tim's life. He received Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church. In this edifice, he discovered and cultivated God-given musical talents. Multi-talented yet humble, he was a gifted pianist and a silky smooth crooner with a keen ear for all genres of music. He later joined St. Paul C.M.E. Church in Chicago, Illinois, with his wife Gilda. He served as the head of the Transportation Ministry and was a Male Chorus and Men's Ministry member.
Tim was gainfully employed throughout his life and retired as a Supervisor from the South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District after 23 years of service on June 1, 2010. Upon retirement, he relocated to Fairfield, Alabama.
As an avid fisherman, horticulturist, and novice astronomer, Timothy enjoyed rest and relaxation in nature. Tim loved the Lord, his family and friends authentically and whole-heartedly. He was affectionately known by several names, including: Tim, Timmy, Baby Boy, Papa, Unc, and Bo Bo, all of which he answered to readily. Timothy possessed all of the essential qualities of a man. He demonstrated grace, generosity, strength, intelligence, wisdom, and humor. He stood tall, thought deeply, and loved purely.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ella Walker; his siblings: Pearling, Faye Nell, Car, Hilburn, Charles Lindbergh, Robert Glenn, Thomas George, Frank, Jr., Lillie Belle, Tommiedale, Evelyn, Mary Ella, Lillie Ruth, James, Marchall, George and May; his don, Derrick Walker; his grandson, Tyshawn Starling.
